Alone | We shall take a fictional book today, as I feel that he deserved a little break from the dry but more informative factual books. | He chose a book on a terrible things done in class by a boy. He seemed more lively today and responded enthusiastically when i asked him certain questions about the book. However, it was a pretty long book and we were unable to finish the book. As such, i decided to ask him to use his creativity to come up with a possible conclusion to the story. At first, he seemed a little shy in sharing his view but after a little probing, he came up with a conclusion that was widely similar to that of the author's. | Through this program, Bahaudeen seems to be able to be making progress not only in terms of his exposure to new genres of books, but also in terms of an increased bank of vocabulary and creativity. |

Alone | We have decided to focus entirely on factual books as I try to widen Bahaudeen's general knowledge of things outside of fiction and mysteries. | Today, we chose a rather lengthy book on "Green Transport". Bahaudeen seemed to take a great interest in the term 'global warming', but did not understand what it meant. I explained it to him and he was also introduced to new words pertaining to the environment, such as 'green house gases' and 'carbon monoxide'. | At the end of the session, we did a recap and i asked him to recall the words that he had difficulties pronouncing to me. |

Alone | Today i am going to introduce him to continue from last week and keep in line with trying to introduce him to new genres. (Factual books) | We continued with our progress from the previous session, and chose a slightly longer fictional book. I was confident that through a gradual process of introducing him to this new genre, he would slowly become receptive towards it, and not find it too boring. Today, he chose a book on Pandas. Along the way, we came across certain words that he did not recognise. I explained the meaning of those words to him, and introduced to him the concept of extinction of rare animals etc. | At the end of the session, i tested him on these words and on extinction and to my delight, he managed to remember all of them. Good progress. |

Personal Reflections – 30th April

Alone | Today i am going to introduce him to a new genre of books, the more factual type of books as compared to the usual fiction that he chooses. As usual, i would pick up certain words during the course of reading the book, and would explain the meaning of the words to him, before testing him at the end of the session to see if he could remember what they were | He seemed to have certain reservations at first thought, but agreed nonetheless to try it out. To entice him to read it up, i suggested we chose a short factual book and a short fictional book, in order to enjoy the best of both worlds. He chose a book on the Human Body. At the end of the session, he seemed willing to continue this method of reading, and i achieved my purpose of introducing him to an entirely new genre of books. | At the end of the session, he seemed willing to continue this method of reading, and i achieved my purpose of introducing him to an entirely new genre of books. |

Alone | I am looking forward to the session. Today, I will continue to allow Bahaudeen to select his own books. | Bahaudeen obviously prefers the fictional books as compared to the factual ones. Today he picked a book on solving a mystery in school. It was fun and interesting. | Upon further reflection, i realized that Bahaudeen continued to have issues with his reading fluency. At times, he would go too fast and guess the next word before even reading it. |

Alone | Before the session, I was looking forward to it. I remembered how well the previous session had gone and was pleased to know that the kid was receptive upon seeing me again. | Things went as per normal, although this time i tried to address his problems by starting to get him more involved in the reading process. He read out loud for most of the book, and I was pleased to note that no further problems were discovered. | After the session, i felt that it had gone well again. The kid seemed enthusiastic about the program, as i was. |

Personal Reflections – 27th March

Alone | Before the session, i was feeling slightly nervous, as i did not know what the Bahaudeen would be like. Moreover, I am not a frequent visitor of the library, so i felt that it would be quite tough to teach him how to borrow books when i seldom did myself. | However, i was given much relief during the service. I found out that he was very attentive and patient, and chose books that were relevant to his age and ability. | I felt that overall, our first session had gone considerably well. The kid few problems here and there, but none that i am not confident of dealing with in the coming weeks. |
